	Each Exercise should begin and end with the Tonic Chord, or Chord built upon tfu> First Degree of the Scale, Place the Root of each Chord in the Bass. Do not employ the Seventh Degree of the Scale as the Root of a Chord. Avoid awkward or long skips in the Bass. Let us work out a harmony for the following:
	The first chord must be the Tonic Chord. Put the Root C in the Bass and fill in the chord:—				This will also be the final chord.
	Having used the Octave Position for the first chord, the next chord should be in either the Third or the Fifth Position. If B is considered the Third of a Chord, the Root of the Chord must be G; if B is the Fifth of a Chord, the Root will be E.
	Try both:			Since it will have two tones in common with the open­ing chord let us select the Chord of E, (Fifth Posi­tion).
	Next, we have C again. This may be the Root of the Chord of C or the Third of the Chord of A:—			Let us select the latter.
	Next we have D, which may be harmonized:—			We prefer the latter.
